FCS Department Scholarships

Applications are accepted January 1 through February 15 for the
following academic year awards. 
 

Award amounts vary from year to year.


Mary King Burrier Scholarship

Applicant must meet the following criteria:

  • Family and Consumer Sciences’ department major of Junior classification planning to graduate the following year
  • Minimum 3.0 GPA
  • Demonstrate financial need as determined by the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)
  • Submit two (2) letters of reference which outline the following:
  • Dependability – Truthfulness, Honesty, Punctuality
  • Service – Cooperation, Helpfulness, Responsibility, Willingness
  • Leadership – Personality, Self-Control, Initiative
  • Loyalty to the Department of Family and Consumer Sciences at EKU

Mary King Burrier (FRESHMAN) Scholarship

Awarded Freshman Year Only

Applicant must meet the following criteria:

  • Major in an area of Family and Consumer Sciences
  • Have a minimum GPA of 3.0 – must provide documentation
  • Have a minimum ACT score of 21 – must provide documentation
  • Demonstrate financial need as determined by the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)
  • Obtain two (2) recommendations which relate to this scholarship (forms are included with application)
  • Prepare an ‘essay’ to accompany the application which addresses the following:
  • Career focus and the reasons for choosing Family and Consumer Sciences
  • Skills which exemplify professionals in the career
  • Leadership capabilities and potentials including prior experiences in school academic efforts, organizations, and community activities

Marva Ann Harris Spirit Award

Nominations by faculty, staff, students’ colleagues, and self-nomination/application will be accepted.

Applicant must meet the following criteria:

  • Be enrolled as a full-time or part-time student in good standing at EKU
  • Have completed 45 semester hours; at least one semester of this must be completed at EKU
  • Have a minimum of 2.5 cumulative GPA; both EKU and transfer GPA may be considered
  • Show evidence of a persistent commitment to civic engagement (e.g. community service, volunteerism, service to the University, mentorship of fellow students, and dedication to EKU, the Department of Family and Consumer Sciences, and their program area of study
  • Have civic engagement activity simultaneous with coursework
  • Provide summary listing of civic engagement with application
  • Provide documentation of his/her services involvement (e.g. letters of commendation, handwritten notes from people served)

Roberta B. Hill Scholarship

Applicant must meet the following criteria:

  • Be an undergraduate or graduate student enrolled at EKU with a minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA
  • Major in any academic area within the EKU Department of Family and Consumer Sciences
  • Demonstrate financial need as determined by the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)
  • College transcripts (official or unofficial) must accompany application

    →First preference is given to a “non-traditional” student (25 years of age or older when he/she first started or re-entered college).
